Velcro-style hook backing is the scratchy side of a hook-and-loop setup. It grabs onto the soft loop side found on many tactical hats, dog harnesses, range bags, backpacks, uniforms, and gear panels.

This is the best option when you want a patch that can be removed, swapped, repositioned, or moved from one piece of gear to another.

What Is Adhesive Backing?

Adhesive backing is a sticky-backed option. Instead of attaching to loop material, it uses a peel-and-stick adhesive layer to attach to a surface.

This is better for flat, clean, non-fabric surfaces where you want the patch to stay in place without needing a loop panel.

If the back of the patch has a white paper liner that peels away, that is adhesive backing.

Hook-backed patches are not sticky. They need a loop surface to attach to. Adhesive-backed patches are sticky, but they are not meant to be repeatedly removed and swapped like hook-backed patches.

If you are putting the patch on a hard surface like a case, toolbox, shelf, bin, or display panel, choose adhesive backing.

Common Mistake: Thinking Hook Backing Is Adhesive

One of the most common mix-ups is assuming that a Velcro-style hook-backed patch should also stick like a sticker. It will not. Hook backing is made to grab onto loop material, not bare plastic, metal, leather, wood, or fabric.

If your hat, vest, harness, or bag does not already have a loop panel, you will need to add a loop surface first or choose an adhesive-backed option instead.
